What is age-related macular degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD):

  • Is the leading cause of vision loss for people over the age of 60
  • Gradually destroys the central vision needed to see objects clearly and perform common daily tasks
  • Affects the macula which allows us to read, drive, and recognize faces
  • Causes no pain but can lead to central or legal blindness
  • Can advance slowly or rapidly
  • Can cause vision loss in one or both eyes—patients with advanced AMD in one eye are at high risk of developing it in the other eye
  • Can be categorized as “dry” or “wet,” each requiring different treatment

If a comprehensive eye exam identifies a retinal problem, the doctor will refer you to a retinologist: an ophthalmologist who specializes in the treatment of the retina.

Dr. Jeffery Stephens and Dr. Niraj Shah are fellowship-trained retinal surgeons. They specialize in caring for problems of the vitreous cavity and retina, including premature retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, detached retinas, and macular degeneration.
